Description

Residential energy use is about 20% of the total energy consumption in the U.S. and it is significantly affected by residents’ energy-related behavior. Our goal is to realize a new paradigm for energy-aware communities, leveraging smart devices and social games to engage residents in understanding and reducing their home energy use. Toward this goal, we developed MySmartE, a smart home energy application (app) that aims to promote heating and cooling energy efficiency in residential communities. The platform is designed to help residents easily apply personalized energy-saving tips to their setpoint schedule and form sustainable energy-saving habits by participating in social energy games. To induce users' behavioral change, our energy app is deployed on visual and voice interfaces (wall-mounted tablet and Amazon, Alexa) with smart thermostat control capabilities. MySmartE is implemented in two affordable housing communities with multi-unit residential buildings and single-family homes in IN. Our presentation will present an overview of MySmartE along with key findings from the field deployment such as the potential energy savings and the impact on residents' energy awareness and sustainable behavior changes. To achieve this we leverage our field data and introduce a household utility model to learn the attributes that affect users’ decisions during the intervention.
