Description

In the United States, residential buildings account for 21% of primary energy consumption, and fossil fuel combustion in buildings leads to 30% of total greenhouse gas emissions. Decarbonizing residential buildings using a combination of energy efficient upgrades and electrified equipment is necessary to reduce carbon emissions, meet climate goals and support energy justice. However, these types of energy upgrade projects are still not mainstream due to limiting factors such as high costs, project complexity, occupant preference, and perceived risks. This symposium will explore some of the opportunities and barriers to residential decarbonization by bringing together three project teams that have utilized large-scale survey instruments to better understand decision-making frameworks using social science methods. Three perspectives will be explored: homeowner and renter decision-making themes, contractor/remodeler information and media sources and retrofit market drivers. The first perspective describes a mixed-methods study led by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory which investigated how households make home modification and energy-related decisions, using a series of 125 interviews and a 10,000-household survey. The second survey, part of a broader set of studies led by Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies, asked a representative sample of US remodelers and remodeling trades about their use of remodeling media and the kinds of information they receive, particularly around energy-related retrofit technologies and programs including planned IRA incentives. The third perspective presents results from a survey led by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory that aimed to study the drivers, opportunities, and challenges in the single-family energy upgrades market in the US and understand the current perspectives on home electrification. Participants shared strategies, solutions, and innovations to achieve decarbonization through electrification and make it appealing for homeowners and contractors. Together, the speakers will discuss how these large-scale survey instruments can be used to advance adoption of essential technologies relevant for decarbonization.
