Description

This session will provide attendees with in-depth information needed to better serve Indigenous survivors of sex trafficking. The presenter will first start with a definition of trauma and will share historical insights on different points in history that have negatively impacted Indigenous people, leading to higher rates of intergenerational and historical trauma. The presenter will share current context of Indigenous experiences of victimization, including violent victimization, intersections with systems, and sex trafficking. The presenter will share ways that sex trafficking impacts Indigenous survivors, and how systems intersections can make it harder for Indigenous survivors to find long-term safety and stability. The presenter will share a variety of Indigenous frameworks of healing and resilience, with ways that case managers and advocates can connect their Indigenous youth clients with these tools regardless of location. These frameworks include different ways of considering resilience and wellbeing, specific tools and activities that can be used in advocacy and case management, and ways that providers can help Indigenous survivors feel more welcome in their organizations.
