Survivors of human trafficking often pass through healthcare systems unseen, their stories silenced by fear, stigma, and systemic barriers. Yet within these systems, patient advocates have the power to help survivors be heard, believed, and protected. This workshop explores the transformative role of patient advocacy in healthcare spaces—how it not only supports survivors through crisis but also ensures they’re not retraumatized by the very systems meant to care for them. We will anchor this workshop in the real-life story of a pregnant survivor who visited a Medical Safe Haven (MSH) clinic in Sacramento on November 18, 2022. An MSH team member quickly recognized signs of distress—avoidance of eye contact and vague, anxious responses. Through gentle, trauma-informed engagement, the patient disclosed that her trafficker, who was also the father of her unborn child, was waiting in the parking lot, armed and threatening her life. The team immediately activated an emergency response, coordinating with clinic staff and trusted anti-trafficking detectives. The trafficker was arrested on-site, and the patient was safely relocated to a secure residence, where she remained protected through childbirth and the duration of the criminal trial. This case study will serve as the foundation for deeper exploration into how advocacy intersects with clinical care, law enforcement, and long-term survivor support. The workshop will include our statewide patient advocate team who will share their experiences, outcomes, and resources from a survivor center care model structured to support patients through every step: identification, treatment, and recovery. Attendees will gain insight into how advocates play a crucial role in linking patients to critical services like legal support, housing, and trauma therapy. The session will address the complexities of navigating stigma, mistrust of institutions, and systemic gaps in care. Participants will also learn strategies to build survivor trust, reduce re-traumatization, and advocate effectively within healthcare teams. This workshop is not just a reflection on what happened to the patient—it is a call to action for healthcare systems to institutionalize advocacy as an essential tool in supporting survivors of trafficking.
