As the system tasked with ensuring the safety/well-being of children, child welfare (CW) has a vital role in a multidisciplinary response to human trafficking (HT). If you are an advocate working with system-involved youth, CW staff, or a policymaker, understanding CW’s mandates and how they are implemented provides insights beneficial to your work. In response to federal/state legislation, CW agencies across the U.S. have strengthened strategies to address HT. What do these responses look like 10 years in to implementing federal law mandating increased CW responses to HT? How do they fit within the broader set of responses to HT? What lessons have been learned and how are children and families still falling through the cracks? After a review of mandates for state CW, a panel discussion with members from the National CW Anti-Trafficking Collaborative will highlight state-level responses, lessons learned, and next steps. Each member offers a unique perspective on these efforts.
