Running away frequently or for long periods has been known as one of the most significant indicators of potential child sex trafficking, and assessments and screenings across the nation have listed it as a top indicator of victim identification. Even when well-intentioned, when youth are labeled as runaways, it often shifts how laws and systems respond to youth, the services and support accessible to them and their families, and how they are perceived by the professionals they interact with. This workshop will focus on how youthSpark partners with Fulton County Juvenile Court and other metro Atlanta agencies to reframe our approach to youth who are missing and likely undisclosed CSEC victims. We will explore existing policies and the on-the-ground experiences of these children to uplift alternative policy provisions, coordinated public and private multidisciplinary approaches, and education/awareness efforts to prevent further victimization and close one of the most extensive on-ramps to exploitation and abuse.
