Description

Youth who have experienced trafficking have very high rates of trauma and systems involvement prior to, during, and subsequent to being trafficked. It is essential that professionals in the anti-trafficking workforce and child-serving systems more broadly are well trained to recognize and effectively respond to trafficking. Unfortunately, there are considerable challenges in workforce preparation regarding effective identification, safety planning, needs assessment, trauma-informed interaction with youth and caregivers, and collaborative multi-disciplinary response. One strategy to better prepare professionals is Problem Based Learning Simulation (PBL-S) training. The National Center on Child Trafficking has collaborated with a cadre of partners and advisors with a broad range of intersecting lived and professional expertise to develop a trafficking-focused PBL-S training in which both experienced and new professionals entering the field are afforded opportunities to develop trafficking knowledge, practice communication and interaction skills to be used with trafficked youth and their caregivers, and master strategies for addressing an array of challenges. Essential to the development of the training was engagement of a diverse Advisory Group comprised of individuals with lived experiences of trafficking, expertise in simulation training, diverse expertise regarding vulnerable populations, and an emphasis on representation and intersectionality. This group was convened prior to the writing team to ensure diverse perspectives and lived expertise were leading development. Strategies utilized for engagement, organizational processes, and “lessons learned” will be explored. Presenters will then engage in a segment of the Trafficking PBL-S with the audience. This participation-based experience will highlight this innovative methodology for training multidisciplinary, child-serving professionals in their response to youth and families impacted by trafficking.
