Description

This interactive, professionally tailored training invites participants into a powerful, simulation-based learning experience that brings to life the real narratives of child sex trafficking survivors. Road Maps is grounded in the nationally recognized “In Her Shoes” model developed by the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (WSCADV), and has been adapted by the Oregon Department of Justice’s Trafficking Response & Intervention Program (T.R.I.P.), housed within the Oregon Attorney General’s Office, to reflect the diverse and complex realities of trafficked minors. The session immerses attendees in a two-part experience: a hands-on simulation followed by a facilitated debrief. Designed specifically for professionals working in systems that intersect with child trafficking, such as child welfare, law enforcement, the judicial system, medical and mental health services, and victim advocacy, Road Maps provides a structured environment where participants follow one of six survivor narratives. Each participant navigates a series of decision points that illustrate how traffickers groom, isolate, and exploit victims; the systemic barriers survivors encounter; and the critical role service providers play in shaping a survivor’s path toward safety, justice, and healing. The storylines explore intersections of trauma, systems involvement, economic instability, and institutional response. In the second half of the session, participants engage in a guided group debrief. This space is designed to surface emotional reactions and provoke deep reflection on individual and organizational practices. Participants will examine how their own assumptions or systemic roles may unintentionally create or uphold barriers for victims. The session encourages identifying current strengths, sharing successful strategies, and collaboratively troubleshooting ways to reduce harm and increase access to care. The conversation emphasizes critical self-reflection with the goal of improving survivor-centered responses and challenging harmful norms embedded in service systems. Road Maps is more than a simulation, it is a one of a kind learning experience that centers the voices of child trafficking victims and challenges service providers to look inward and equips them to shift toward more accessible and equitable care.
